Paraguayan harpist · leader of the Juanjo Corbalán Quartet
Juanjo Corbalán leads his personal project, Juanjo Corbalán Quartet, an ensemble that explores the sound worlds of Paraguayan popular music, integrating traditional rhythms from Paraguayan and Latin American instrumental music with jazz influences. The Paraguayan harp—Paraguay’s emblematic folk instrument—takes center stage here in a free, contemporary musical context.
The quartet has delivered standout performances at festivals such as the World Harp Festival, AsuJazz, and Jazz al Este. In 2019 they toured Spain and Portugal; in 2020, Uruguay; and in 2022 they returned to Europe with concerts in Belgium, Portugal, Switzerland, Germany, and the Netherlands, where they earned the First Prize as finalists at the Dutch Harp Festival competition (Utrecht). More recently, they completed a third visit to Europe with dates in Spain and Portugal, in addition to jazz festivals in Ecuador and Colombia.
In 2023 they recorded the quartet’s fourth album, under the musical direction of Brazilian pianist André Marques (pianist for Hermeto Pascoal), released in early 2024. Throughout 2024, Juanjo performed at various venues and festivals across Germany, the Netherlands, and France.
Folklore de Paraguay is a sonic journey that celebrates the nation’s musical identity, from Asunción to its most intimate corners. Recorded at one of Paraguay’s most prestigious studios, the album captures the purity and authenticity of traditional instruments with a modern approach.
The Paraguayan harp shines in the hands of Juanjo and Sixto Corbalán, while the rhythmic textures of Daniel Pavetti add organic depth. Arrangements by Omar Valdez bridge tradition and the present, and Josias Montania on bass connects folklore with a jazz-informed language.
An ideal selection for scenes that call for cultural authenticity, organic warmth, and rhythmic drive—a powerful alternative to AI-generated music.
